Packing data

When ClipMagic exits, the data is 'tidied up' so that any 'holes' left after deleting items are removed. However, to actually compress the data yourself at any other time, select Tools/Pack Data, or press the Pack Data button on the main toolbar. With large amounts of data, compression can take some time. A progress indicator is shown in the middle of the main window status bar.

Empty trash

When you delete an item from a category it is actually placed in the Trash folder. You can remove items from the Trash folder in a number of ways :

- Select all the items in the Trash category and press delete.
- Select Empty Trash from the Tools menu.
- Press the Empty Trash button on the
main toolbar.

Purge options

To keep the default category and trash folder from growing too large you can have ClipMagic remove old items from it on startup. You can specify how many days old items should be before they are removed from either category. This is done in Advanced Options.

Backing up the database

Any database that you depend on should be backed up regularly. The ClipMagic database is no exception. Furthermore, because ClipMagic is usually running all the time, if your system should crash or you fail to close your computer down properly, there is always a chance that the ClipMagic data will be corrupted, because ClipMagic wasn't given a chance to save everything and tidy up before shutting down.

We therefore recommend you back up your ClipMagic database regularly. You can do this using File/Backup Database or setting the automatic backup option in Options.

For those that wish to backup manually or use an alternative backup program the following files represent the main ClipMagic database :

- clipmagic.qdb
- categories.qdb
- clipdata.qdb
- hotkeys.qdb
- notes.qdb
- rules.qdb
- ruleseq.dat

These will appear in the directory you have chosen for your ClipMagic data directory. In Windows 95, 98 and Me the Data Directory defaults to the ClipMagic main program directory. In Windows NT, 2000 and XP the Data Directory will be in your Application Data directory (usually: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\ClipMagic). You can change the data directory under Tools/Options/Advanced.
