Frequently Asked Questions

How to reset all settings and delete database?

If you wish to start over with a fresh database and "factory default" settings you can run the CleanUp tool:

http://www.clipmagic.com/software/CMCleanUp.exe

Be warned that this deletes your data and starts over with a new database.

How do I restore my Database?

If you have backups enabled, or have made manual backups, you will have a folder in your ClipMagic data directory called 'Backups.

Look under Tools/Options/Advanced to determine the location of your data directory. It is usually:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your_User_Name\Application Data\ClipMagic\

Within the Backups folder you will see a number of subfolders named in the format YYYYMMDDHHMMSS.

To restore your database first ensure ClipMagic is not running and then copy the files in the appropriate backup folder (the most recent, or from the date you want to restore from) to the ClipMagic data directory.

We recommend enabling automatic backups under Tools/Options/General.

Something appears in ClipMagic that I didn't copy there

Some applications use the clipboard to store information when they shouldn't. Applications aren't supposed to use the clipboard unless you ask them to. However, some do. Even before you started using ClipMagic they have been doing this but you just didn't notice. Now that you have ClipMagic you know about it!

If you want you could create a rule to ignore the item from that application.

I have set up rules but they don't seem to work

Usually this is just that the order that rules are processed hasn't been taken into account. In the Rules dialog you will see the list of rules. Rules are processed from the top down.

A rule above the rule you have just created may have processed the incoming clip already. Use the up down finger buttons to set the order in which the rules are created.

I get error: You don't appear to have a default category...

This applies to releases earlier to version 3.1:

On startup you may get the following error:

"You do not appear to have a default category, please create one."

In previous versions situations could arise that caused no default category. If you get this error please download and install CM3.1 and do the following:

- Press OK
- Once ClipMagic has started create a new category under the root.
- Right click on the new category and select 'Set as Default'.
- Restart ClipMagic

If this doesn't fix it try:

- Exit ClipMagic
- Delete cats.dat from your ClipMagic data directory*
- Restart ClipMagic
- Create a new default category as above

* To locate your ClipMagic data directory look under Tools/Options/Advanced. Your data directory is listed at the bottom of the dialog. It is usually something like:

c:\documents and settings\your_user_name\application data\clipmagic
